Thoraco-Omphalopagus Conjoined Twins at 29 Weeks Gestation – the Diagnostic and Management Challenges
نویسنده
چکیده
The aetiology of conjoined twins is unknown with no established risk factors. The pathogenesis is also uncertain but if cell differentiation takes place after the 14th day of embryonic development, incomplete cleavage will result in the formation of conjoined twins. A system of classification established by St Hiliaire in 1832 is still used today and is based on which structures are fused. The Greek suffix –pagus, meaning “what is fixed”, differentiates the type.

Early prenatal diagnosis of thoraco-omphalopagus twins at ten weeks of gestation by ultrasound
Early prenatal diagnosis of conjoined twins, an extreme form of monozygotic twinning, is very important for the further management and counselling of parents because they are associated with high perinatal mortality. We present a case of thoraco-omphalopagus twins diagnosed at ten weeks and four days of gestation by two-dimensional Doppler ultrasound, which was then terminated.

Conjoined twins are derived from the division of a single fertilized ovum; a phenomenon accompanied with multiple congenital anomalies. Such twins are identical, of the same sex, and more likely to be female. Most twins die during the embryonic period, and only 18% survive longer than 24 hours. There are complex anomalies in thoraco-omphalopagus twins that makes them unlikely to live long enoug...
متن کاملThoracopagus conjoined twins diagnosed by sonography
Objective: Conjoined twins are identical twins with congenital anomaly and severe mortality. The more common types include the thoraco-omphalopagus, fused at chest, and thoracopagus type, fused from the upper thorax to lower belly, at the chest. Here we are reporting one case of thoracopagus conjoined twins diagnosed by sonography. A 23-year-old woman with gravida 1 admitted to our clinic was d...

Abdullah H, et al. BMJ Case Rep 2017. doi:10.1136/bcr-2017-219793 Description Conjoined twins are very rare with incidence of 1 per 250 000 live births. Fetal MRI is an important adjunct to ultrasound particularly in evaluation of complex fetal anomalies and organ positions. 3 This case report illustrates our first experience in MRI fetal of conjoined twins with the current available sequences....
